Big questions for little minds

Finish this sentence really descriptively - "A field of daffodils looks like..."

"A field of daffodils looks like a wave of golden sunlight" (Samuel - aged 7)
2AP, Earley St. Peters C.E. Primary

Samuel that is a great piece of description. Do you know which bit I like the best? It's the word "wave". You've made me imagine all the daffodils rolling up and down like the waves on the sea.

How many different shapes can you see in your classroom?

"We counted 15 different shapes in our classroom."
Year One, St. Just Primary

Let me guess, Year One. Is the most common shape in your classroom a rectangle? How did I know that?

Who would you most like to join your class?

"MARIO, JOHN TERRY, GAVIN HENSON, DAVID BECKHAM, FERNANDO TORRES, THE WHOLE OF MAN. UNITED, BEN 10, YODA, SLEEPING BEAUTY, IRON MAN, STEVEN GERRARD, DARTH VADER, ROGER ROGER, STEPHANIE, INDIANA JONES, ARIEL, DAISY, TINKERBELL, CINDERELLA and SNOW WHITE"
Year One, St. Just Primary School

"Stop making that silly noise, Darth - it's not big and it's not clever... And Indiana, take your hat off in class! David Beckham, if you've forgotten your P.E. kit again, I won't be happy..."
What a great list, Year One! Here's how I imagine your new class...

Name 7 things you've never seen in your school, but you know are there!

"Ghosts, inside cupboard in A15, loft space above A107, staff room, cellars under A block and a teacher sing"
8S, Dormston School

Sounds like your school has got lots of hidden secrets, 8S (including your teacher's vocal abilities!).

Name ten things that move very slowly.

"James's laptop, Mrs Stead on a Friday morning, going down a slide in jeans, Dylan getting out of bed, Alfie going up the stairs, a turtle, snail, slug, a spider's web being built, Didier Drogba trying to score."
Year 4S, Whaley Bridge Primary School

Thanks for answering today, 4S. Here's an interesting question... Which out of your list would you rate the slowest?

I'm really cross! What's the best way you know to calm me down?

"Buy them presents. Do something they like to do. Watch TV with them. Give them a tickle. Watch their favourite programme. Go to the park with them. Play with them. Do what they want to do. Do what you're told. Do something funny. Be nice to them. Clean up - (if you've made things untidy) Take a deep breath. Thinking of nice things. Take them shopping."
Year One, St. Just Primary School

Ahhh... I'm calm already!

Write some rules for keeping safe on Bonfire Night, without using the word 'don't'...

"Hold your parent's hand. Stay behind the tape. Stay away from the bonfire. Watch from a safe place. Stay calm."
Year One, St. Just Primary School

A well thought-out set of Bonfire Night rules, Year One. It's always good to write rules in a positive way... It helps to know what to do, as well as what not to do...

How many legs are in your classroom right now?

"In our class this morining there were 196 legs."
Primary 6 F, St Josephs Convent P.S Newry

Now, either you could have a massive class (98 pupils!) or you've got a normal sized class and have just found a centipede in the reading corner... Or maybe you just counted all the chair and table legs like I told you! Hmmm...

What is the best age to be and why?

"65 - because you are retired and people look after you. 18 - because you can do pretty much what you want. 21 - because by this age you can go to college, drive a car and have a job. 10 - because you are in double digits. 14 - because you become a man. 3 - because you don't have to go to school."
7S, Dormston School

Brilliant, 7S... Your answer made me smile as I imagined a classroom full of these disperate individuals! Somewhere in your class you have someone who loves having things done for them (wants to be 65), a couple who love to be independent (18 and 21), someone who likes number patterns (10), a man (14!!) and someone who'd rather be somewhere else today (3)!!

What does October look like, sound like and smell like?

"Green, Font Ariel and about size 22."
8S, Dormston School

(sigh!) There's always one!

What is electricity?

"A source of energy"
7P, Dormston School
"A source of power that runs most household items. Toasters work because they use electricity. It's the second biggest source of light... It lights something, runs something or warms something up. Electricity can be dangerous. It is a flow of current. It is nearly everywhere."
7S, Dormston School

Lots of ideas there. Thank you 7P and 7S. Electricity is pretty amazing when you stop and think about it. I particularly like your phrase "it is nearly everywhere". Where is it found (other than through a plug)?

What's the longest word you can see right now?

"Jason - 'Presentations', Frazer - 'International'. Both were on posters around the classroom"
8S, Dormston School

13 letters is pretty impressive. From where I am sitting, the longest word I can spot is 'Thanksgiving' on my calendar!

Why do I see my breath on cold mornings?

"because your cold. and when you brethout. and some times the car windos are smiry."
Anonymous

Thanks for your answer today, Anonymous! Have you noticed that when your breath hits the car window it turns into little droplets? I wonder why that is?

How many times can you fold a piece of paper in half?

"8 times"
2AP, Earley St. Peters CE Primary School
"20 times"
Year 3, Coed Glas Primary School

Two very different answers there! Thanks for sending them in. To anyone reading this: a piece of paper (any size, it doesn't matter) and test it out. What do you think?

The answer is 20. What could the question have been?

"What is my age, doubled, minus 4?"
8S, Dormston School

I really like your answer (I know it was a question, but you know what I mean!) 8S because everyone who reads it will try to work backwards and to find out how old the pupils in 8S are. Bit of useful Maths there...
