Creative Writing at the Pirate Supply Store

The video below features a TED talk by Dave Eggers (a writer from San Francisco) and is inspirational stuff. If you have any interest whatsoever in teaching children creatively, you’ll be interested in what he has to say. He came up with an idea to combine his magazine office with an after-hours tuition centre for any child who needed/wanted help with their reading and writing.

Recognising that going to the ‘Tutoring Centre’ was hardly going to motivate children, the Pirate Supply Store was born… A crazy idea? Well, it worked.

And now, in addition to the Pirate Supply Store in San Francisco, the 826 National organisation runs several other equally creative ventures in places like New York, Boston, Michigan and Chicago… The Time Travel Mart in LA is especially clever (Motto: whenever you are — we’re already then!)  Click here for a full list.

One of the most interesting things about this project is the fact he’s not a teacher. How much can we achieve when we think creatively about motivating our children? We have them five hours a day.

Anyway, watch the video and enjoy this man’s creativity and passion for helping children. (Hopefully you’ll find it more interesting than one man in the audience who keeps a face of granite throughout — clearly not amused!).
